8 Iconic Women in the Music Industry

by Jnmarseille13 (October 10th, 2025)

A celebration of those hard working women who managed to accomplish great things in the music industry.

In a male-dominated industry like the music industry, it’s important to remember and celebrate those women who were able to accomplish great things despite the challenges they had to face. These powerful women are examples to follow for all of us, whether we are men or women. They are also a living proof for all the younger women out there in the music industry that hard work will pay off.

Here’s a list of 8 very iconic women among many more, who have accomplished big things in the music industry…

1/ Sylvia Roberson : Mother of Hip-Hop

She is the co-founder of Sugar Hill Records, and she produced and released Rapper’s Delight (1979), one of the first commercial hip-hop records in history. This song is a classic that basically brought rap music into the mainstream.

2/ Sylvia Rhone : one of the biggest music executives

Sylvia again?? Yes, but a different one. She led some of the biggest record labels in the world, such as Epic Records, Elektra and even Motown Records.

3/ Estelle Axton : Co-founder of Stax Records

She co-founded Stax Records in 1961 with her brother Jim Stewart after mortgaging her own house to buy recording equipment. She ran the label’s record shop, where she mentored young musicians and launched the careers of some of the biggest Soul artists like Isaac Hayes, and made Stax Records one of the biggest Soul labels in history along with Motown.

4/ Roberta Flack : Self-Producing Pioneer

In addition to being very smart, she was also one of the first Black women to produce her own albums in the 1970s, including "Feel Like Making Love". This means she had full control and freedom on her craft and sound.

5/ Rihanna : A pop poster and a boss!

No need to explain to you how big she was as a singer and songwriter. But beyond music, she’s also label boss (Westbury Road Entertainment), fashion CEO (Fenty), and billionaire entrepreneur who owns her masters and creative direction... a boss!

6/ Taylor Swift : Songwriter & Industry Powerhouse

Not only she reclaimed control of her masters by re-recording her catalog, but also managed to become a billionaire through her MUSIC ONLY. She built a massive business empire centered on her songwriting, branding, and ownership. Simply mindblowing!

7/ WondaGurl : Young Production Prodigy

She's a Canadian producer who started working on RIAA-certified projects with Travis Scott, Drake, Jay-Z as a teen. Through her talent, she managed to find a big spot for herself in a male-dominated genre and industry.

8/ Aretha Franklin : Queen of Soul

She got into music by singing gospel in her father’s Detroit church then later got signed to Atlantic Records in the late 1960s. Then she became the “Queen of Soul,” and is still to this day a reference for Black American music.

Conclusion

One thing they all had in common: hard work and consistency. Some of these women are still active; others are no longer with us (may they rest in peace). But their legacies are all very alive, and serve as model for the young hard working women in this industry to not give up on their music journey!
